BLUE EFFECT commented discography
THE BLUE EFFECT :: Slunečný hrob / I've Got My Mojo Working (first single, 1969)
Slunečný hrob by Vladimír Mišík (music) and Jiří Smetana (lyrics) became group's biggest hit after it was used in 1999 retro movie Pelíšky. B-side is classic McKinley Morganfield blues tune's inspired rendition. Radim Hladík's guitar artistry is aleady evident here.
THE BLUE EFFECT :: First EP, 1969
Four bluesy and hippy songs in English and Czech. Line-up is Vladimír Mišík - vocals, harmonica Radim Hladík - guitar, Jiří Kozel - bass, Vlado Čech - drums, Miloš Svoboda - guitar and vocals.
THE BLUE EFFECT :: Meditace, 1970
Epic first side in Czech with both prog and humourous bits. Second side in English is very solid pronounciation to first EP. Mišík, Hladík, Kozel and Čech with additional choir, brass and strings on some tracks.
BLUE EFFECT + JAZZ Q PRAGUE :: Coniunctio, 1970
Experimental collision between rock trio (Hladík, Kozel, Čech) and freejazz group with flute player and saxophonist Jiří Stivín dominating. All instrumental. Some parts sounds like Soft Machine circa Fourth, with added instrumentalists.
MODRÝ EFEKT + JAZZOVÝ ORCHESTR ČS. ROZHALSU :: Nová syntéza, 1971
Another crossing of rock quartet (Radim Hladík, Jiří Kozel, Vlado Čech, Lešek Semelka - piano and organ) with rich possibilities of Czechoslovak Radio Jazz Orchestra. All instrumental, although some tracks were played with lyrics in concert.
M.EFEKT + JAZZOVÝ ORCHESTR ČS. ROZHALSU :: Nová syntéza 2, 1974
Starbright! Great conjunction of rock quartet with lovely personalities of Radim Hladík (g), Lešek Semelka (voc, keys), Josef Kůstka (bg, voc) and Vlado Čech (ds) plus Czechoslovak Radio Jazz Orchestra under direction of Kamil Hála. Great lyrics, penned by Czech poets Pavel Vrba and Boris Janíček, were straightened with mighty Josef Kuhn male chorus in moments.
THE BLUE EFFECT :: A Benefit of Radim Hladík, 1975
Instrumental album created for export issues, later reissued for Czechoslovakia under teethless title Modrý Efekt & Radim Hladík. Same line-up as on previous album. Excelent versions of songs performed in concert with vocals, great interplay with guests Jiří Stivín (alto sax, flute) and Martin Kratochvíl (electric piano). Phenomenal short track Čajovna (aka Tearoom), which became group's trademark tune.
M EFEKT :: Svitanie, 1977
After Lešek Semelka and Josef Kůstka demission, Moravian Oldřich Veselý (voc, keys) of Synkopy 61 and Slovak Fedor Frešo (bg) of Collegium Musicum and Fermata came into picture. From Slovak label Opus, there was rule to sing in Slovak or English. They adapted Czech/Moravian/Slovak folk song Ej padá, padá rosenka, which became one of the highlights of group's repertoire. There are also two jazz-rockish instrumantals and epic second side title song created on purpose, with Jaroslav Hutka's lyrics in Slovak. Very good album.
M.EFEKT :: Svět hledačů, 1979
This is probably band's peak. After Frešo left to play again with Collegium Musicum and Fermáta, Lešek Semelka returned and played bass parts on moog. With Oldřich Veselý still in band, there are two sympathetical singers to sing in both duets and solos. Five long art rock compositions by Hladík, Veselý and Semelka with lyrics by Pavel Vrba and Jaroslav Hutka. Group interlay at its very high.
M.EFEKT :: 33, 1981
Final album of first group's era was recorded in trio: Radim Hladík - guitars, Lešek Semelka - vocals and synths, Vlado Čech - drums. Four compositions with lyrics by Pavel Vrba are not as strong as these on their precedessor, but still include top notch playing.
To be continued...

Aktuální sestava Pavel Hrubý - tenor a sopránsaxofon, basklarinet, František Kučera - trubka a křídlovka, Taras Voloshchuk - kontrabas a Dušan Černák - bicí (posledně jmenovaný, slovenský rodák a m.j.

:My Top 7 albums of CZ jazz & impro 2o1o:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
TOMÁŠ HOBZEK - Stick It Out (Animal Music)
Cyrille Oswald – tenor sax, Dan Tepfer - piano, Tomáš Liška - double bass, Tomáš Hobzek - drums.
When i listened to this album first i forgot completely that was made near Prague. And adventure keeps continuing with Tomáš, Tomáš and Cyrille ~ i dont know Dan much yet. Overall feeling is much like smart modern acoustic jazz, not without intuition. Watch them.
ONDŘEJ ŠTVERÁČEK QUARTET - What's Outside (Cube-Metier)
Ondřej Štveráček - tenor sax, Ondrej Krajňák - piano, Tomáš Baroš - double bass, Marián Ševčík - drums, Radek Němejc - percussion on Three For Kate, Africa and Get Out Of Town.
Keep meeting Ondřej since years ago, when he played middle period Coltrane almost exclusively. Since then, he found ideal bandmates in Slovakia. His first project as a leader is, no wonder, traneing in straight ahead ;b Central piece of the album is famous Africa, not to mention beautiful ballads. Once, at Jazz Černošice, Ondřej's quartet used Luboš Šrámek on electric keyboard instead of Ondrej K on acoustic, and it was a different kind of blue.
Otherwise, these guys are funniest partners at the bar after the show and did also Jazz at Prague Castle live album (Multisonic 2o11), which has one major minus ~ it is too short.
TEMBRYO (Fluidum Records)
Jan Faix - piano, synths; Filip Černý - guitar, live electronics; Jan Kyncl - tenor sax.
Released as free mp3 download and limited edition on USB key in 1o pcs of originally designed big safety matches boxes.
First class european free improvisation in more acoustic setting than are their actual performances. Try it ;;;
VOJTĚCH PROCHÁZKA TRiO - Amoeba's Dance (Animal Music)
Vojtěch Procházka - piano; Adrian Fiskum Myhr - double bass; Tore T. Sandbakken - drums.
Trio launched during Vojta's studies in Oslo with former schoolmates. Original compositions plus pieces by Herbie Nichols, Kurt Weill, Paul Motian and Ornette Coleman. On their concerts, they are actually mostly improvising, as you can hear on Procházka's MySpace. And this albums has one of most enjoyable cover arts in Animal Music catalogue.
POiNTS (Animal Music)
Luboš Soukup - tenor and soprano saxes, clarinet, vocal; Miroslav Hloucal - trumpet and flugelhorn, kalimba; Tomáš Liška - double bass; Tomáš Hobzek – drums and percussion. Guests: Petr Kalfus - alto and soprano saxes; Marcel Bárta – bass clarinet; Jan Jirucha Jr. – trombone; Dorota Barová - vocal; Milan Cimfe - percussion.
I also like their live album from Jazz Getxo (Errabal 2oo9)
Improvising (ob)sessions
Music from NOW
Kytarista Petr Zelenka, flétnista Rodrigo Parejo, saxofonista Marcel Bárta, kontrabasista Vlado Micenko a bubeník Tomáš Hobzek se sejdou, aby společně prozkoumali zvukový vesmír vyvěrající z přítomného okamžiku. Kromě svých nástrojů si vezmou na pomoc pár kouzelných talismanů, vidliček, hrnců, vrtaček, písklátek, bublifuků, objektů nalezených na smetišti a hraček ze svého dětství. Čeká vás jedinečná performance vynesená na světlo z temnoty zkušeben, kde tito muzikanti doposud tajně holdovali svým skrytým obsesím. V průběhu večera muzikanty vystřídají přátelé a kolegové a provedou vás na cestách po různých kontinentech, pod zem i na jiné planety.
ambiente palaces, riverside docks, duos, trios, electro-acoustic ensembles & devices
This week starts with Monday. As usually, thanks god. In some other cultures, week starts with Sunday. Well enough. Lets look for something else. On Tuesday, at Palác Akropolis, we have Mountains in Prague. American duo of Brendon Anderegg and Koen Holtkamp, believes in power of moment and creates sound goblins with acoustic guitars and various effect machines via free on stage improvisations, resulting in original compositions between folk, post-rock, drone-ambient and avantgarde. Concert is part of Music Infinity series, in which promoteur and radio DJ Josef Sedloň fulfills his and many other's ambient and alternative music lovers' dreams.
On Wednesday and Thursday, Norweigian trio of Czech pianist Vojtěch Procházka gives two early evening concerts at Jazz Dock. Vojtěch's bandmates from Oslo are Adrian Fiskum Myhr (double bass) and Tore T. Sandbakken (drums), and they are doing much more improvising on stage than on their first album Amoeba's Dance (Animal Music 2o1o). Vojtěch is member of fantastic Vertigo sextet, who released groundbreaking album Metamorphosis around month ago, and also is creating music with Per Oddvar Johansen or Yvar Grydeland, among others, not to mention his studying with Christian Wallumrod. Concerts are starting from 7, entry 12o, or 9o for jun / sen. Check also french cider at jazzdock bar, suggests miloo2.
And for sure, adventurous duo DoMa Ensemble, comprised of Dorota Barová & Marcel Bárta, again from 7PM at Dock on Friday. With saxophones & bass clarinet, voices, cello and a few smart machines, life partners (Doma means Home) and members of Vertigo are creating spacious soundscapes, which will be available as originally packaged cd on undeground label Polí5 from that day. CD launch concert guests will include Vojtěch Procházka on prepared piano. Welcome to Parade!
On Saturday, Slovak trumpeter Laco Deci and his New York Celula plays their premiere gig at Jazz Dock, from 22PM. Laco's fusion-funk unit is in good form now and include his son, Vaico Deczi on drums, long-time bass guitar madman Nob Kinukawa, and synth magician Walter Fishbacher. Good chance to hear their infectious dance of joy in new space.
What about Sunday? Well, we can meet in Jazz Time, where British / Canadian blues duo of Paul Millns (piano and voice) & Butch Coulter (guitar, harmonica) will perform various songs during their Jazz Meets World series appearance. Or, let's go for Sunday Dixie with cornetist Bob Zajíček & his Classic Jazz Colleguim at Jazz Dock from 7. On Monday, May 23, Jazz of 4 Continents festival is continuing at the same place. Michaela Rabitsch (trumpet, flugelhorn, vocals) and Robert Pawlik (guitar) from Austria, with M.M. German (drums) from Argentine and Tomáš Liška of Points or Tomáš Hobzek 4tet, will blend jazz with Agentinian tango and music of Rio de la Plato.
On May 23, NTS progjazz trio (Michal Nejtek - keyboards, samples, electronics, Petr Tichý - double bass, electronics ) and Štěpán Smetáček - drums, electronics) has vinyl release party for their second album Permanente Frustration at Malostranská beseda from 8:3o PM. On Wednesday and Thursday, Norweigian trio of Czech pianist Vojtěch Procházka gives two early evening concerts at Jazz Dock. Vojtěch's bandmates from Oslo are Adrian Fiskum Myhr (double bass) and Tore T. Sandbakken (drums), and they are doing much more improvising on stage than on their first album Amoeba's Dance (Animal Music 2o1o). Vojtěch is member of fantastic Vertigo sextet, who released groundbreaking album Metamorphosis around month ago, and also is creating music with Per Oddvar Johansen or Yvar Grydeland, among others, not to mention his studying with Christian Wallumrod. Concerts are starting from 7, entry 12o, or 9o for jun / sen. Check also french cider at jazzdock bar, suggests miloo2.
And for sure, adventurous duo DoMa Ensemble, comprised of Dorota Barová & Marcel Bárta, again from 7PM at Dock on Friday. With saxophones & bass clarinet, voices, cello and a few smart machines, life partners (Doma means Home) and members of Vertigo are creating spacious soundscapes, which will be available as originally packaged cd on undeground label Polí5 from that day. CD launch concert guests will include Vojtěch Procházka on prepared piano. Welcome to Parade!
On Saturday, Slovak trumpeter Laco Deci and his New York Celula plays their premiere gig at Jazz Dock, from 22PM. Laco's fusion-funk unit is in good form now and include his son, Vaico Deczi on drums, long-time bass guitar madman Nob Kinukawa, and synth magician Walter Fishbacher. Good chance to hear their infectious dance of joy in new space.
What about Sunday? Well, we can meet in Jazz Time, where British / Canadian blues duo of Paul Millns (piano and voice) & Butch Coulter (guitar, harmonica) will perform various songs during their Jazz Meets World series appearance. Or, let's go for Sunday Dixie with cornetist Bob Zajíček & his Classic Jazz Colleguim at Jazz Dock from 7. On Monday, May 23, Jazz of 4 Continents festival is continuing at the same place. Michaela Rabitsch (trumpet, flugelhorn, vocals) and Robert Pawlik (guitar) from Austria, with M.M. German (drums) from Argentine and Tomáš Liška of Points or Tomáš Hobzek 4tet, will blend jazz with Agentinian tango and music of Rio de la Plato.
On May 23, NTS progjazz trio (Michal Nejtek - keyboards, samples, electronics, Petr Tichý - double bass, electronics ) and Štěpán Smetáček - drums, electronics) has vinyl release party for their second album Permanente Frustration at Malostranská beseda from 8:3o PM. Free mp3 download of whole album is on their bandzone.cz profile.
Music Stimuli & Top 7 albums of Czech jazz 2o1o
Stimul Festival 2o11 - May 9th, May 13th (Stian Westerhus @ Archa theatre)...
Den Evropy - free festival at Old Town Square on May 9th, also in Ostrava
Among others, there will be special line-up of singers Lenka Dusilová & Dorota Barová with members of Vertigo from 7PM at Staromák ;D
Free improvisation electro-acoustic duo Christof Kurzmann & Crys Cole plays as part of Jazz Meets World series on May 12th at www.skolska28.cz. Concert starts early enough to catch beginning of Soft Machine Legacy at Lucerna Music Bar... :7) Before it you can listen to my radio programme on Soft Machine, made before their Prague concert back in 2oo8.
On May 11 & 12, trio of American pianist Aaron Goldberg with Reginal Veal (bass) and Gregory Hutchinson (drums) is playing at Jazz Dock. I heard recently his album Worlds (Sunnyside 2oo6) with top class colleagues, bassist Reuben Rogers and master drummer Eric Harland, which contains very inventive composing and playing within so-called modern jazz tradition. His current bandmates are no less of high profile and Gregory has good link to Czech jazz, as he is playing on NY date It's About Time (Animal Music 2o1o) with NajPonk (Fender Rhodes) and Ondřej Pivec (Hammond organ). Album was awarded with annual Angel prize in jazz & blues category for last year by Czech Academy of Popular Music.
On Wednesday, May 11th, there is also interesting concert at Kaštan club. French sax / bass / drums jazz punk trio Les Yeux de la Tête (in fact they are doing whole Czech tour recently, check their MySpace profile via hyperlink in case of interest) will be preceeded on stage of very friendly place at Prague Břevnov district by Skrytý půvab byrokracie (or Hidden Charm of Beaurocracy), alternative rock unit including now Jan Faix of Tembryo on synths & beats.
On Friday, May 13th, at Jazz Dock will be launched first solo project by Jaryn Janek, prolific bass guitar player of Czech jazz, rock and pop scene. Now Jaryn introduces himself as composer of very nice and listener-friendly overgenre songs via album Ty lidi (These People, released by Indies Scope), on which he gathered impressive cast of players and mostly female singers. All Martina Fišerová, Lenka Dusilová, Marek Dusil, Markéta Foukalová of Lanugo, Dorota Barová, Jana Šteflíčková and Eva Turnová of Plastic People of the Universe and E-turnity promised to be there. Such a lovely company, which can turn Friday the 13th into pleasant evening!
What i missed here was impro-ambient evening at Charles University student club K4 on May 9th, but funnily enough i was there by complete coincidence. Great performances, especially by Vertigo pianist Vojtěch Procházka (2 early evening concerts of his own jazz trio with former Norweigian schoolmates at Jazz Dock on May 18 & 19) and visual artist / sound manipulator Martin Blažíček. So many things happening now in Prague, if it will continue this way, we will have our own Freedom Of The City festival here soon ;7D Now, watch also for Bards of Bohemia dance, music & poetry evening in Celetná 20 with Zdenka Trvalcová & Michal Stulík, Damonica and Samuel Hain of Cain da Breth, Steve Hubback, Gela Poshikova and Morianne.
My Top 7 albums of CZ jazz & impro 2o1o:
TOMÁŠ HOBZEK - Stick It Out (Animal Music)
Cyrille Oswald – tenor sax, Dan Tepfer - piano, Tomáš Liška - double bass, Tomáš Hobzek - drums.
When i listened to this album first i forgot completely that was made near Prague. And adventure keeps continuing with Tomáš, Tomáš and Cyrille ~ i dont know Dan much yet. Overall feeling is much like smart modern acoustic jazz, not without intuition. Watch them.
ONDŘEJ ŠTVERÁČEK QUARTET - What's Outside (Cube-Metier)
Ondřej Štveráček - tenor sax, Ondrej Krajňák - piano, Tomáš Baroš - double bass, Marián Ševčík - drums, Radek Němejc - percussion on Three For Kate, Africa and Get Out Of Town.
Keep meeting Ondřej since years ago, when he played middle period Coltrane almost exclusively. Since then, he found ideal bandmates in Slovakia. His first project as a leader is, no wonder, traneing in straight ahead ;b Central piece of the album is famous Africa, not to mention beautiful ballads. Once, at Jazz Černošice, Ondřej's quartet used Luboš Šrámek on electric keyboard instead of Ondrej K on acoustic, and it was a different kind of blue.
Otherwise, these guys are funniest partners at the bar after the show and did also Jazz at Prague Castle live album (Multisonic 2o11), which has one major minus ~ it is too short.
TEMBRYO (Fluidum Records)
Jan Faix - piano, synths; Filip Černý - guitar, live electronics; Jan Kyncl - tenor sax.
Released as free mp3 download and limited edition on USB key in 1o pcs of originally designed big safety matches boxes.
First class european free improvisation in more acoustic setting than are their actual performances. Try it ;;;
VOJTĚCH PROCHÁZKA TRiO - Amoeba's Dance (Animal Music)
Vojtěch Procházka - piano; Adrian Fiskum Myhr - double bass; Tore T. Sandbakken - drums.
Trio launched during Vojta's studies in Oslo with former schoolmates. Original compositions plus pieces by Herbie Nichols, Kurt Weill, Paul Motian and Ornette Coleman. On their concerts, they are actually mostly improvising, as you can hear on Procházka's MySpace. And this albums has one of most enjoyable cover arts in Animal Music catalogue.
POiNTS (Animal Music)
Luboš Soukup - tenor and soprano saxes, clarinet, vocal; Miroslav Hloucal - trumpet and flugelhorn, kalimba; Tomáš Liška - double bass; Tomáš Hobzek – drums and percussion. Guests: Petr Kalfus - alto and soprano saxes; Marcel Bárta – bass clarinet; Jan Jirucha Jr. – trombone; Dorota Barová - vocal; Milan Cimfe - percussion.
I also like their live album from Jazz Getxo (Errabal 2oo9)
And a DOT to round and shape this furure :7)
[ bought it from artist’s shops or, at least, do not pay stealers ]
This album is not from 2o1o, but i was listening to it a lot during last year and it has timeless qualities. Stivín’s newest major studio project incorporates perfectly (jazz) improvisation with ancient music, using medieval and renaissance songs, trained singers, old instruments and percussionist Alan Vitouš.
Tellemarkk on Sarurday, Vertigo on Easter Monday and Tuesday too
Improvising unit Tellemarkk, founded by Pavel Hrubý of Limbo and universal multiinstrumentalist Tomáš Reindl, who alredy released his multi-tracked solo album Omnion on Amplión Records, is playing tomorrow in Dejvice, at Café Potrvá from 8PM. Pavel (saxes, bass clarinet, voice) and Tomáš (drums & percussion, tabla, didjeridu, pre-clarinet, blues harp, voice) were joined later by singing cellist Dorota Barová of Vertigo and Tara Fuki and in January they launched their first, self released album Koncert ze staré synagogy v Plzni, recorded previous year with trumpet player František Kučera of Limbo acoustic line-up as guest. Café Potrvá is starting series of regular jazz and improvised music concerts - hooray !!!
On Easter Monday, and also on Tuesday, April 25+26, new album Metamorphosis of Prague based sextet Vertigo will be launched Jazz Dock. One of recent top Czech jazz bands was founded in late 2oo2 by five young, but already experienced musicians, originated from different parts of Czech or Slovak Republic. Their first album Vertigo Quintet (Amplión 2oo5) was awarded with prestigious Gold Angel (formerly Czech Grammy) in Jazz & Blues category and brings pure acoustic contemporay jazz, close to ECM aesthetics. After second album Live U Staré Paní (now defuncted, nice Prague jazz club), with guest singer Lenka Dusilová on one and ad hoc string quartet in two compositions, again on Amplión Records in 2oo6, they attracted Spanish Fresh Sound New Talent label, but somehow it did not happened. What happened was collaboration with Silesian cello player and vocalist Dorota Barová, after Quintet and his indivdual members guested on third album Auris (Indies Scope 2oo7) of highly original dual vocals / cello duo Tara Fuki, and moving under new label, ambitious Animal Music. Here was their 2nd studio work, named Vertigo Quintet & Dorota Barová, released in 2oo8. Marcel Bárta (soprano, alto & tenor saxes, bass clarinet), Oskar Török (trumpet), Vojtěch Procházka (piano), Rasislav Uhrik (double bass) and Daniel Šoltis (drums; all members also play small percussion and other various instruments on new album) are focusing also on other projects in between playing with sextet, which shortened his name to Vertigo, with Dorota as permanent member now. Metamorphosis is probably their most ambitious project to date (as all previous albums, comprised only of individual members' original compositions, this time mostly penned by Marcel Bárta) and is being released again by Animal Music as label's second output this year. After few listenings I can highly recommend it, as well as Tellemarkk cd :o)))
McCoy Tyner Quartet at Prague Castle, Wakushoppu 0.3 in Café v lese & more
This week starts with quartet of longtime John Coltrane sideman, pianist McCOY TYNER (with Gary Bartz - alto sax, Gerald Cannon - double bass, Eric Gravatt - drums; update - on drums was Francisco Mela and Bartz played also curved soprano. Highlight for me was Tyner's ballad Search For Peace, last piece before encore. I believe concert video will be soon available at jazznahrade.cz under Zaznamy z koncertu flag) in palatial Spanish Hall of Prague Castle on Monday, April 11. On Tuesday, there is great postbop quartet of virtuoso tenor saxophonist Ondřej Štveráček at Jazz Dock (with his Slovak bandmates Ondrej Krajňák - p, Tomáš Baroš - db, and Marián Ševčík - dr), who released very fine album What's Outside (Cube-Metier) last year, and Swiss CHRISTPH STIEFEL INNER LANGUAGE TRIO at Jazz Time same day. Electric jazz Swedish THE STONER with Czech guitar prodigy DAVID DORŮŽKA will play at Divadlo 29 in Pardubice on Wednesday, at Prague Jazz Dock for next two days and at JAZZFEST BRNO, which is going into full flow, on Saturday.
On Wednesday, April 13, there is also quartet of black American singer CARLA COOK at Jazz Time, where Jazz Meets World series continues next evening with voice acrobat from Cameroon GINO SITSON and his French/American quartet featuring Lonnie Plaxico on bass. Same days, Wed/Thu, at Lucerna Music Bar will appear bands of American guitarists MIKE STERN and DEAN BROWN as part of AghRTA Prague Jazz Festival. Saturday concerts include TIRTHA - pianist Vijay Iyer's Indian trio with guitarist Prasanna and tabla player Nitin Mitta at Jazz Time, and duo of German singer and celtic harp player NADIA BIRKENSTOCK with Prague based Welsh percussionist and metal sculptor STEVE HUBBACK at K4 club.
Not enough?
At Café v lese in Prague district Vršovice you can witness evening entitled Wakushoppu 0.3 with free improvisers TEMBRYO (free album download here) and K!amm / PelikáN on Wednesday 13th. Next week will happen launch concerts of brand new album Metamorphosis (Animal Music) by VERTIGO sextet (formerly Vertigo Quintet and then Vertigo Quintet & Dorota Barová) at Jazz Dock. Speaking about METAMORPHOSIS, if you will be around Pardubice on Friday, international quartet of the same name will present their 'contaminated chamber music' at Divadlo 29. Their latest two albums were released by renowned freejazz label Leo Records and band is offering 7 tracks from them for free download.
