Jan Garbarek, Nils Petter Movaer and others in Prague

Agentura P&J Music už dlouhá léta přiváží do Čech veličiny i méně známé tváře jazzu a World Music.

V pořadí třetí saxofonistovo album Afric Pepperbird (1970) vydal tehdy začínající, dnes ikonický label ECM, do jehož „stáje“ patří Garbarek neodmyslitelně dodnes. V Garbarkově bohaté diskografii najdeme i společné nahrávky s mezinárodními ikonami jako Keith Jarrett, Ralph Towner, John McLaughlin či Bill Frisell, nemluvě o významných skandinávských hráčích jako Terje Rypdal nebo Bobo Stenson. Officium (1993), první společná nahrávka s britským vokálním kvartetem Hilliard Ensemble, dodnes patří k umělecky i komerčně nejúspěšnějším položkám katalogu gramofirmy ECM.

Ve Fóru Karlín zahraje mistr lyrické hry se sestavou, prověřenou dlouhými léty intuitivní souhry. Německého klavíristu, hráče na elektrické klávesové nástroje, skladatele a také universitního pedagoga Rainera Brüninghause jsme mohli slyšet už na Garbarkově albu Legend Of The Seven Dreams (1988). Krom toho má Rainer Brüninghaus za sebou spolupráci s Carlou Bley, Garym Burtonem nebo Bobbym McFerrinem.

Hvězdný indický perkusista a bubeník Trilok Gurtu (též John McLaughlin či Barre Phillips) přijal v poslední dekádě roli Garbarkova dvorního koncertního bubeníka.

(JMW promo)

Erik Truffaz Quartet feat. Anna Aaron
Sophie Hunger
Út, 12. 3. 2013 - 20:00 | Divadlo Archa
www.rachot.cz

V posledním desetiletí je ovšem největší atrakcí, daleko přesahující hranice Francie i jazzové subklutury, právě hudba skromného trumpetisty a kapelníka Erika. Truffaz není ani tak jazzovým virtuozem, jako spíš nenápadným objevitelem a stmelitelem stylotvorných proudů. Po albech Nina Valeria a Out Of The Blue, na kterých už hráli současní členové jeho kvarteta, ale hudba těžila hlavně z jazzové tradice 50. a 60. let, přišla doslova časovaná bomba v podobě krátkého alba The Dawn roku 1998 a následné hodinové kolekce Bending New Corners v roce příštím. Další koncert v Lucerna Music Baru odehrál Truffaz se svou druhou sestavou, nazývanou Ladyland Quartet (viz alba Mantis a Saloua), a poté opět s hlavní partou a novým, elektrifikovanějším a rockem inspirovaným albem The Walk Of The Giant Turtle (2003).

British prog legend U.K., whose short career spanned from 1977 to 1980, re-united earlier this year in line-up from their second album Danger Money (1979). John Wetton - bass and vocals (ex-Family, King Crimson, Uriah Heep, still working with Asia), Eddie Jobson - keyboards and violin (ex-Curved Air, Roxy Music, Frank Zappa) and Terry Bozzio - drums (ex-Frank Zappa) toured United States succesfully and for this May's European tour Wetton and Jobson joined forces with Australian guitar prodigy Alex Machacek and drummer Gary Husband (Allan Holdsworth, John McLaughlin and many others). This actual version of U.K. will play their Prague premiere on May 29th at Lucerna Music Bar as part of Prague International Bluenight series. In June, "American" line-up of Wetton-Jobson-Bozzio will play five dates in Japan, where they taped their third and final album, a live recording Night After Night in 1979.

On the same evening, May 29th, there is another concert of Jazz Meets World series at Jazz Time - MAMADOU DiABATÉ & PERCUSSiON MANiA, African rhythm-driven quintet from Burkina Faso. Upcoming events of JMW series include American surrealistic blues octet HAZMAT MODiNE (with noted jazz tuba player Joe Daley) on June 7th at Rock Café, 8-piece goup of flamenco guitar legend PACO DE LUCiA (main hall of Lucerna on June 26th), bassist AViSHAi COHEN's new project DUENDE (which seems to be a duo with pianist Nitai Hershkovits, concert at Hybernia Theatre on October 21st) and jazz veteran, 80 years old  tenor saxophonist SONNY ROLLiNS as part of Strings of Autumn festival (again in Lucerna main hall, October  31st). Associated series Jazz at Prague Castle continues on June 19th with world class Czech double bassist GEORGE (aka Jiří) MRAZ and his American quartet including Rich Perry on tenor sax and Joey Baron on drums.

Among regular concerts in Prague prominent Jazz Dock club, there is return of TODD CLOUSER'S A LOVE ELECTRiC, a highly praised American-Mexican guitar-led unit on June 1st. For weekend of June 21-23, Jazz Dock stage (and roof) will be part of free UNiTED iSLANDS festival, with three or more acts each day.

Another free festival, more classic rock oriented ZADARMOFEST, located in one of the largest Prague garden pubs in Riegrovy Sady, is entering its third edition with three Thursday evenings in June, July and August. Each concert stars at 6PM and programme is as follows:

June 7th: Nasycen, Bratranci Veverkové Jethro Tull Tribute, Rain
July 19th: Red Baron Band, Kulhánek~Holeček~Razím~Kowacz, Silent Session, Oskar Petr
August 30th: Dirty Seedz (USA/CZ), Red Baron Band, Silent Session, Vinnie James (UK)

Dave Douglas, MM&W, Brian Blade, Avishai Cohen, Pat Metheny & other jazz icons in Czech soonish

The Cherry Thing - a collaboration between Scandinavian power jazz trio The Thing (freejazz icons Mats Gustafsson - saxes, Ingebrigt Haker Flaten - bass, Paal Nilssen-Love - drums) and a trip-hop diva Neneh Cherry (daugher-in-law of great late trumpeter, Ornette Coleman collaborator and early world music inventor Don Cherry) on July 2 in Lucerna Music Bar, Prague. Reports from first concerts of this unusual collaboration at The Thing's website are enthusiastic. The Cherry Thing album in praparation. It is far yet at the moment.

A bit closer is Dave Douglas with his Keystone sextet at Jazz Dock on May 20. Medeski, Martin & Wood will visit Prague for second time  - after bursting open air show during United Islands of Prague 2oo6 they fulfill industrial Meet Factory space on April 23, under Jazz Dock direction. Phenomenal drummer Brian Blade intruduces himself as a troubadour with guitar, backing band and his songs from Mama Rosa album at Jazz Dock a night earlier.

Harmolodic mayhem - Free Form Funky Freqs aka Vernon Reid (guitar), Jamaaladeen Tacuma (bass guitar) and Grant Calvin Weston (drums) will be back 5 dates in Czech from April 12 to 19 - Prague stop at Jazz Time on 18th.

Dont forget Jazz Meets World series, which bring FFFF last year for the first time (into nearly empty Jazz Time cellar). Nearest is Russian-American Alex Sipiagin Quartet at Jazz Time on April 14. Prolific trumpeter Alex 'Sasha' Sipiagin is member of Dave Holland's Big Band and Octet and recorded a series of fine albums for Criss Cross label. His latest one named Destinations Unknown features stellar line-up of Chris Potter and David Binney on saxes, Craig Taborn on piano / Fender Rhodes, Eric Harland on drums and fellow Russian in NYC and current leader of Mingus Big Band, Boris Kozlov on bass. Alex Sipiagin was previously in Prague many years ago as member of Normal Garden, a brilliant septet led by trombonist Christophe Schweizer. From other concerts accesible through JMW website I would like to mention Roy Hargrove Quintet (April 10) and Jiří 'George' Mráz Quartet (with Joey Baron and Rich Perry, June 19) at Prague Castle.

April 10 also marks beginning of JazzFest Brno, which will feature Alex Sipiagin Quartet and Brian Blade Mama Rosa group again, alongside Vijay Iyer Trio, Jiří Stivín & Mojmír Bártek 70th birthday group with Didrik Ingvaldsen, Matěj Benko Quintet, Tigran Hamasyan, Inner Spaces featuring David Dorůžka, Donny McCaslin Quartet, Avishai Cohen Trio (new line-up) and more in between April 10 and 26th. Plus new exciting Pat Metheny Group featuring Chris Potter, Ben Williams and Antonio Sanchez at JazzFest Echoes concert on June 28.

Most actually there is launch of  CD One from Otto Hejnic Trio at Jazz Dock, April 1. Versatile drummer and percussionist Otto Hejnic (he is also photographer, as you can see on his website) recorded around 30 albums as sideman up to date and One, released  by Hevhetia label from Slovakia, is his first project as a leader. Colleagues in his trio are double bass player Josef Fečo (member of Zuzana Lapčíková Quintet or Libor Šmoldas Quartet, also on new Japan CD Kafka on the Shore by Emil Viklický Trio) and pianist Ondrej Krajňák (of Ondřej Štveráček Quartet a.o.). More intimate concert at Potrvá café is preceding on March 31. Guesting on both evenings will be Hungarian singer and saxophonist Gábor Winard.

Apropos Potrvá - next Saturday, April 7th, brings another evening of regular Improvising (ob)sessions free jazz series, this time with Free 5 - a promising combination of Luboš Soukup and Marcel Bárta (saxes), Oskar Török (trumpet), Jan Jirucha (trombone) and Daniel Šoltis (drums). Concert will be recorded for Euro Jazz web radio broadcast.

And last today's announcement - a world jazz legend Oregon as part of AghaRTA Prague Jazz Festival at Lucerna Music Bar, April 18. Bon Appetite ;~}

ambiente palaces, riverside docks, duos, trios, electro-acoustic ensembles & devices

This week starts with Monday. As usually, thanks god. In some other cultures, week starts with Sunday. Well enough. Lets look for something else. On Tuesday, at Palác Akropolis, we have Mountains in Prague. American duo of Brendon Anderegg and Koen Holtkamp, believes in power of moment and creates sound goblins with acoustic guitars and various effect machines via free on stage improvisations, resulting in original compositions between folk, post-rock, drone-ambient and avantgarde. Concert is part of Music Infinity series, in which promoteur and radio DJ Josef Sedloň fulfills his and many other's ambient and alternative music lovers' dreams.

On Wednesday and Thursday, Norweigian trio of Czech pianist Vojtěch Procházka gives two early evening concerts at Jazz Dock. Vojtěch's bandmates from Oslo are Adrian Fiskum Myhr (double bass) and Tore T. Sandbakken (drums), and they are doing much more improvising on stage than on their first album Amoeba's Dance (Animal Music 2o1o). Vojtěch is member of fantastic Vertigo sextet, who released groundbreaking album Metamorphosis around month ago, and also is creating music with Per Oddvar Johansen or Yvar Grydeland, among others, not to mention his studying with Christian Wallumrod. Concerts are starting from 7, entry 12o, or 9o for jun / sen. Check also french cider at jazzdock bar, suggests miloo2.

And for sure, adventurous duo DoMa Ensemble, comprised of Dorota Barová & Marcel Bárta, again from 7PM at Dock on Friday. With saxophones & bass clarinet, voices, cello and a few smart machines, life partners (Doma means Home) and members of Vertigo are creating spacious soundscapes, which will be available as originally packaged cd on undeground label Polí5 from that day. CD launch concert guests will include Vojtěch Procházka on prepared piano. Welcome to Parade!

On Saturday, Slovak trumpeter Laco Deci and his New York Celula plays their premiere gig at Jazz Dock, from 22PM. Laco's fusion-funk unit is in good form now and include his son, Vaico Deczi on drums, long-time bass guitar madman Nob Kinukawa, and synth magician Walter Fishbacher. Good chance to hear their infectious dance of joy in new space.

What about Sunday? Well, we can meet in Jazz Time, where British / Canadian blues duo of Paul Millns (piano and voice) & Butch Coulter (guitar, harmonica) will perform various songs during their Jazz Meets World series appearance. Or, let's go for Sunday Dixie with cornetist Bob Zajíček & his Classic Jazz Colleguim at Jazz Dock from 7. On Monday, May 23, Jazz of 4 Continents festival is continuing at the same place. Michaela Rabitsch (trumpet, flugelhorn, vocals) and Robert Pawlik (guitar) from Austria, with M.M. German (drums) from Argentine and Tomáš Liška of Points or Tomáš Hobzek 4tet, will blend jazz with Agentinian tango and music of Rio de la Plato.

Adam Pieronczyk / Gary Thomas Quintet plays music of Krzystof Komeda and Mladí ladí jazz or The Young Ones Are Tuning Jazz contest

Quatro Formaggi: Jan Bálek
At Friday, there was first concert of 4 current evenings from The Young Ones Are Tuning Jazz project at Jazz Time in Prague (sorry I forget to mention it in previous week listing). After the set of last year's volume winners, Fanfán Tulipán quintet, who already released their debut album via Czech Radio label Radioservis, first band in competition took place at stage. Fusion quartet Quatro Formaggi from Prague set standards very high and showed virtusity in original compositions, ranked into jazz-rock area occupied by Weather Report and some more latin-funk acts since 70's.

Fliud Culture: Tomáš Bouda, Iva Šulcová
Next was another jazz rock, or more precisely prog quartet Fluid Culture, originated from North Czech, with very fine, unusual original compostions, dense arrangemts and guitar player Tomáš Bouda, who learned a lot from Allan Holdsworth without being a clone. Third band in competition was quartet 4Leaf from East Czech with more traditional jazz sound. First prize include sponsoring from Metropolitan University Prague for realisation of debut album.

Jan Kořínek & Groove
After announcing of winner, or final order of contest (which was, not surprisingly, exactly the same as stage order of bands) and best soloist (drummer Dušan Černák from Quatro Formaggi) due to 5 headed experts / musicians jury, there was nice closing set of hammond drived jazz / blues line-up Jan Kořínek & Groove featuring pianist NajPonk and tenor sax player Osian Roberts.

Mladí ladí jazz project continues in next 3 weeks: on Friday, April 22 at Jazz Republic club (On Line Session, Robert Balzar Trio and French Matmon Jazz by DJ Ordoeuvre), Thursday, April 24 at  Jazzdock (Thea Soti Quartet from Hungary, Lesní zvěř and Slovak AMC Trio with Ruggero Robin from Italy) and on Thursday, May 5 at Divadlo Na Prádle (announcement of contest winners and Metropolitan University Prize, concert of Czech Harmcore and Slovak trumpet player Laco Deczi with his Celula New York band).

This Monaday evening at Jazz Time is dedicated to music of great Polish jazz pianist and film music composer Krzystof Komeda in new arrangements of soprano and tenor sax player Adam Pieronczyk, who co-leads international quintet with his instrument colleague from United States, respected tenor player Gary Thomas. Concert is part of Jazz Meets World series.

On Wednesday, April 20, improvising Portuguese Open Field String Trio comprised of João Camões (viola), José Miguel Pereira (double bass) and Marcelo dos Reis (nylon string guitar) is playing at K4 club.
