Czech quartet Limbo will celebrate 20 years on jazz scene

Brainchild of Pilsen saxophonist, clarinetist and composer Pavel Hrubý, LiMBO was founded back in 2004 as a trio with Prague based Ukrainian double bass player Taras Vološčuk and drummer Miloš Dvořáček. With addition of trumpet and flugelhorn player František Kučera, quartet recorded their eponymous self-released debut in 2005 (digitally reissued by Signals from Arkaim in 2013 with bonus track).

Two years later, second album named Kalimbo was released by new Czech label Amplión. Both first and second album include vital acoustic jazz inspired by such artists as Art Ensemble of Chicago and Ornette Coleman luminaries Old And New Dreams.

In 2009, Pavel Hrubý set electro-acoustic version of Limbo with pianist / keyboardist Michal Nejtek, guitarist Jiří Šimek (Muff, NUO), percussionist Tomáš Reindl (Omnion, Tellemarkk) alternating bassists Taras Volščuk, Martin Kapusník or Tomáš Liška and drummer Martin Kopřiva. Resulted recording is named Out Of Body and was issued again by Amplión Records.

Third album Koncert (Polí5 2012) marks return to acoustic quartet format and arrival of highly talented Slovak drummer Dušan Černák. Last album Details was released in 2017, again on Polí5 label. In following years, Pavel Hrubý, who plays tenor, soprano and alto saxophones along with clarinet and bass clarinet, focused on soprano and bass clarinet with Limbo. Trumpet player František Kučera was replaced by alto saxophonist Petr Kalfus on some concerts.

In 2023, Limbo will play five concerts with new line-up: Pavel Hrubý - soprano sax and bass clarinet, Oskar Török - trumpet (Vertigo), Taras Vološčuk - double bass and Dušan Černák - drums. During this summer new album recording is planned and Pavel Hrubý announced his return to tenor sax for Limbo. In 2024, group will celebrate its 20th anniversary with large tour and fifth album will be released on Amplión Records.

Mezinárodně uznávaný hudebník, skladatel a inovátor zahájil svou úctyhodnou kariéru v Chicagu ve státě Illinois v energií nabitých 60. letech minulého století. Je držitelem četných vyznamenání a ocenění, mimo jiné ceny The American Music Center Letter of Distinction, The International Jazz Critics Poll, od časopisu Down Beat Magazine a dalších ocenění.

Filipínsko-americký saxofonista, skladatel a absolvent jazzových studií na Juilliard School Jon Irabagon se ve svém díle snaží vystihnout identitu často marginalizované menšiny a zároveň nechat promluvit svůj vlastní hudební hlas. Časopis Time Out New York ho označil za jednu z „25 jazzových ikon“. Spolupracoval s legendami, jako jsou Lou Reed, Herbie Hancock a Wynton Marsalis, jakož i s některými z nejvýraznějších a nejorginálnějších hráčů na současné scéně: Davem Douglasem, Mary Halvorson, Barrym Altschulem a kapelou Mostly Other People Do The Killing.

Hudbu přímo pro něj napsali autoři jako Peter Ablinger, Maria de Alvear, Anthony Braxton, John Cage, Peter Hansen, Hauke Harder, Bernhard Lang, Joelle Léandre, Alvin Lucier, Chris Newman, Pauline Oliveros, Hans Otte, Lars Sandberg, Wolfgang von Schweinitz, Daniel James Wolf a Christian Wolff.

Mezioborový nadžánrový PMP Ensemble se zaměřuje na různé formy řízené improvizace, kombinuje klasickou notaci s grafickými partiturami, vypsanými, aleatorickými i zcela improvizovanými pasážemi. V mezinárodním ansámblu figurují přední představitelé experimentální a improvizační scény.

Polí5 new jazzy releases

Newest one is cooperation of Czech alternative / prog band STROM STíNU and avant jazz big band BUCiNATORES ORCHESTRA, whose leader and trombonist Jan Jirucha created new arrangements for some Strom stínu songs and added few original compositions. The album (released as CD and bandcamp download with Name your price option, as most of Polí5 releases) will be launched in concert at Prague Jazz Dock on December 22.

Few moths ago was released fifth album by LiMBO, actually Czech / Slovak / Ukraine quartet of Pavel Hrubý - saxes, bass clarinet, František Kučera - trumpet and flugelhorn, Taras Voloshchuk - double bass and Dušan Černák - drums. (Previous history and discography of Limbo is portrayed here). New album is titled Details and unlike earlier recordings, based on spontaneous improvisation and composing in studio mainly, new repertoire was already prepared before recording. Spirit of their original inspiration Art Ensemble of Chicago is still present.

Another title from Polí5, HLASkontraBAS by singer RiDiNA AHMED and bassist PETR TiCHÝ, is perfect picturesque example of acoustic versus electronics, as both members of duo are using looper tools. Petr Tichý is one of most in demand bassist of Czech jazz scene and member of NTS trio, while Ridina Ahmed is known for co-operation with Floex on his album Pocustone, longtime solo vocals and experimenting with looping, as heard on her first solo album Hlasem (Amplión Records 2006).

Tellemarkk on Sarurday, Vertigo on Easter Monday and Tuesday too

Improvising unit Tellemarkk, founded by Pavel Hrubý of Limbo and universal multiinstrumentalist Tomáš Reindl, who alredy released his multi-tracked solo album Omnion on Amplión Records, is playing tomorrow in Dejvice, at Café Potrvá from 8PM. Pavel (saxes, bass clarinet, voice) and Tomáš (drums & percussion, tabla, didjeridu, pre-clarinet, blues harp, voice) were joined later by singing cellist Dorota Barová of Vertigo and Tara Fuki and in January they launched their first, self released album Koncert ze staré synagogy v Plzni, recorded previous year with trumpet player František Kučera of Limbo acoustic line-up as guest. Café Potrvá is starting series of regular jazz and improvised music concerts - hooray !!!

On Easter Monday, and also on Tuesday, April 25+26, new album Metamorphosis of  Prague based sextet Vertigo will be launched Jazz Dock. One of recent top Czech jazz bands was founded in late 2oo2 by five young, but already experienced musicians, originated from different parts of Czech or Slovak Republic. Their first album Vertigo Quintet (Amplión 2oo5) was awarded with prestigious Gold Angel (formerly Czech Grammy) in Jazz & Blues category and brings pure acoustic contemporay jazz, close to ECM aesthetics. After second album Live U Staré Paní (now defuncted, nice Prague jazz club), with guest singer Lenka Dusilová on one and ad hoc string quartet in two compositions, again on Amplión Records in 2oo6, they attracted Spanish Fresh Sound New Talent label, but somehow it did not happened. What happened was collaboration with Silesian cello player and vocalist Dorota Barová, after Quintet and his indivdual members guested on third album Auris (Indies Scope 2oo7) of highly original dual vocals / cello duo Tara Fuki, and moving under new label, ambitious Animal Music. Here was their 2nd studio work, named Vertigo Quintet & Dorota Barová, released in 2oo8. Marcel Bárta (soprano, alto & tenor saxes, bass clarinet), Oskar Török (trumpet), Vojtěch Procházka (piano), Rasislav Uhrik (double  bass) and Daniel Šoltis (drums; all members also play small percussion and other various instruments on new album) are focusing also on other projects in between playing with sextet, which shortened his name to Vertigo, with Dorota as permanent member now. Metamorphosis is probably their most ambitious project to date (as all previous albums, comprised only of individual members' original compositions, this time mostly penned by Marcel Bárta) and is being released again by Animal Music as label's second output this year. After few listenings I can highly recommend it, as well as Tellemarkk cd :o)))
